CBD Oil and cancer
The subject on CBD oils and their effectiveness in treating different forms of cancer have been a very hot topic. We have come across different kinds of testimonials of people claiming to have used CBD oils or other cannabis-based products to treat their cancers effectively. Some people have even come up to explain that they used home-made cannabis products to treat cancer. This has raised so much interest in the pharmaceutical industry forcing different companies to invest in studying the potency of CBD oil in treating cancer. The truth is that at the moment, there aren’t enough trials to conclusively say that any CBD oil or any other cannabis-based product can be used to treat cancer. A few trials have produced promising results, but there is still a lot to be discovered on the full extent of using these products and on their long-term effects.
How can CBD Oil help in fighting cancer?
The limited information available shows that CBD oil can help not just in fighting the growth of cancer cells but also in destroying existing cancer. How exactly does it achieve this? To better understand how Cannabidiol oil can be useful in fighting tumors, lets first understand how cancer cells come to be.
Formation and Growth of Cancer Cells
Your body contains so many cells some of which are supposed to multiply and divide to form new tissues. This process is advantageous as it is supposed to enhance your growth and development. To make sure that the processes of cell multiplication and division run smoothly we have genes known as oncogenes. These control the ability of your cells to grow thus making sure that nothing prevents or slows down the process. We also have a group of tumor suppression genes whose responsibility is to ensure that the growth of cells doesn’t become too aggressive for your body.
These two sets of genes ensure that cell growth within your body remains within safe levels. Unfortunately, numerous factor can interfere with this process thus resulting in cancer. For instance, oncogenes within your body may be activated when they are not supposed to. This leads to aggressive cell growth which in turn develops into cancer. In some cases, the tumor suppression genes get turned off when they are desperately needed. With the genes deactivated, nothing will stop your cells from overgrowing, and this will also result in cancer growth.
The process of the growth and development of cancer cells is usually broken down into five stages; hyperplasia, dysplasia, primary tumor, invasion of metastasis. The exact cause of this growth is still unknown, but exposure to certain factors increases the risk of getting the condition.
So, how do CBD oils fight cancer cells?
As you may already know, the two main cannabinoids present in cannabis, CBD and THC, work within the endocannabinoid system where they interact with the cannabinoid receptors to deliver the needed effects. The main cannabinoid receptors in the system are CB1 and CB2. Scientists believe that when you take CBD oils, the cannabinoid connects to either the CB1 or CB2 receptors in the cancer cell inducing the production of ceramide. The increase in ceramide levels kills the cells thus reducing and preventing the growth of cancer.
But, how exactly do the cancer cells end up dying? Is it due to cytotoxic chemicals? No, it isn’t. There used to be concerned that CBD and cannabis oils managed to fight cancer cells by increasing cytotoxic chemicals which even though its use for this purpose it can also be dangerous to the users. Studies have, however, shown that the cannabinoids work by increasing ceramide which in turn alters the functioning of the mitochondria which ultimately leads to the death of the cells. Increase in ceramide triggers sphingolipid rheostat, and this enhances the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane to a vital protein known as cytochrome c. The protein plays a crucial role in the production of energy necessary for the cells to function. As the protein moves out of the cell, energy production is compromised, and this ends up killing the cell.
Ceramide is also known to disrupt the cell’s digestive system. As its levels in the cells increase, it prevents the cell from making essential nutrients it needs to function. It will also block essential pro-survival pathways making it even harder for the cells to survive. Ceramide also works by causing genotoxic stress which ensures that no cancer cells can survive. This interferes with calcium metabolism in the mitochondria starving the cells to death.
As you can see, an increase in ceramide is useful in killing cancer cells, and this is precisely what cannabinoids such as CBD can achieve. More clinical studies are necessary to fully understand how cannabinoids can be best utilized for efficient cancer treatment.
How is CBD oil used in treating the effects of Cancer treatment?
CBD oil is very well known for its impact in relieving the effects of cancer treatment. Trials have shown that cannabidiol is effective in reducing pain and nausea. It can also be used to stimulate appetite. This highlights some of the biggest issues that most if not all cancer patients go through. With CBD Oil, you will reduce the pain of chemotherapy, and nausea that some of the drugs are known to cause. Some people also find it really difficult to eat while on these medications. With some CBD oil, you can boost your appetite helping you to eat healthier and live a better life.
What’s even better is the fact that CBD oils come in different forms and are also very safe. If you feel like you don’t have the energy to take any more pills, you can rely on CBD edibles, and tinctures which will deliver the same results at a much faster rate.
If you are a cancer patient, then I am sure you are excited about using these oils to ease the effects of your treatment. Before rushing to place your order, we will advise you to consult your oncologist first to determine how safe it is for you. This is because CBD oils are known to affect people differently depending on their medical history and other factors. The physician will help you to know how much of the oil you will need to use and how it should be used to ensure that it doesn’t interrupt with your cancer treatment.
What’s the future of CBD oils in cancer treatment?
The future is very bright. A lot of the studies already done have reported promising outcomes even though most of them are done in laboratories and on animals. Limited studies were done on humans also produced terrific results. For instance, a small study done by Dr. Manuel Guzman and his team sought to see the impact of highly purified THC on a certain type of brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme. In this study, THC was supplemented to the brain directly through tubes. At the end of the trial, they discovered that it reduced the growth of cancer and was also seen to be very safe. Even though the study was done in a limited setting and with no control group, the results showed just how useful the cannabinoids can be.
There is also the issue on whether natural or synthetic cannabinoid is the best for the treatment of cancer. Multiple clinical studies are already underway trying to answer this question. One trial, for instance, used a pharmaceutical grade cannabis extract known as Sativex (nabiximols) which contains both CBD and THC, to determine how effective it is. This extract was used alongside chemotherapy temozolomide, and the results were very impressive. The trial showed that using the two medications increased the survival rate of individuals living with a brain tumor from 53% to 83%! It was, however, a small trial involving less than 21 patients and hence we still can’t entirely rely on it.
We also cannot ignore the numerous cases online of cancer soldiers who have reported treating their cancer with CBD and cannabis. It is a bit hard to verify all these claims, but some of them appear to be true. We’d, however, like to caution you from fully relying on these testimonials when making your purchase. Don’t let them trigger your expectation because there’s still no conclusive scientific evidence that shows CBD oil or any other cannabis product for that matter is effective in treating cancer.
The future is promising, but you must maintain your expectation. We still don’t know between natural or synthetic cannabinoid which one is more effective for this purpose. We also don’t know the effective doses and the types of cancer that can be treated by CBD. We are hopeful that all the unknowns will be addressed soon enough to the delight of millions of cancer patients worldwide.
